LIVE TROUT

Follow the rainbow – and the brown

Trout has become synonymous with fly-fishing as recreational activity. Fishing syndicates have sprung up all over South Africa and areas with pristine waters have become popular with leisure farmers, guest lodges and the large variety of tourism venues serving the hospitality trade.

Dullstroom and the Mpumalanga Highlands, with its close proximity to Gauteng, has been dubbed Trouteng with good reason. Ideally situated in the Dullstroom area, Lunsklip farm has become the go-to provider for live stocking of syndicate dams and rivers, assisting guest lodges with sound advice as to the how, when and how to stock.

Fishing & recreational farming

Lunsklip Fisheries is a national live fish supplier to approximately 70% of South Africa’s trout dams, streams and aquaculture farms. We aim to deliver within three days of order.

  • We stock, throughout South Africa, a variety of angling sizes of live trout, brown and rainbow.
  • Fingerlings and ova.
  • As a service to our customers we provide fish food to grow and monitor fish for both commercial and leisure farmers.
  • Trout ova – certified disease free trout eggs from our Trova farm near Sabie on the Longtom Pass.

We are happy to share our experience and advice with clients, old and new to the trade. Trout is, after all, our passion.

I need to stock my dam – where do I start?

Some points to consider – also known as Stephan’s advice tick list to trout syndicates and owners of guest lodges and leisure farms:

  • Do you have a permit from your local conservation authority?
  • What is your budget?
  • What is the size of your dam or stream?
  • Choose the right season – autumn and winter are the best.
  • Determine the frequency - less fish, more often is Stephan’s slogan for the best results. At least three times a year and if possible, every two months.
  • What size of fish? Angling size varies from 400g to 1kg. Above 500g is best, with 10% above and 10% below. (Take cormorants and other predators into consideration when ordering size.)
  • Rainbow or brown? 90% rainbow and 10% brown is a good mix.
